About the City of Hurricane

Located in southwestern Utah, Hurricane is a city that is quickly becoming a gateway for tourists visiting Zion National Park. Utah is not known for its hurricanes, but the story is that the city got its name in the 1860s when a man named Erastus Snow had the top blown off his buggy by a strong wind. Snow reportedly said, “Well, that was a hurricane,” and named the spot Hurricane Hill. Hurricane is located at an elevation of 3,248 feet above sea level and covers a total land area of 53.63 square miles. As of July 2021, the population of Hurricane was 21,808. The city is located in Washington County. 

Today, Hurricane is known for its historic orchards, which boast peaches and pecans, as well as its fields and open spaces. Virgin River, Quail Creek State Park, and Sand Hollow State Park are all located in the Hurricane area.
